Promised Land

Deuteronomy 18:15 – The LORD your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you, from your brothers—it is to him you shall listen.

Moses speaks to the people of Israel camped on the plains of Moab across the Jordan River from Canaan.  It’s 40 years later, and a new generation of people — all victims of the previous generation’s unwillingness to trust in the Lord — wait poised to enter the promised land for the second time.  Their journey from Egypt to the doorstep of Canaan finally over, the baton of leadership is about to pass from Moses to Joshua.  No small measure of faith, courage and obedience will be required in the days that lie ahead.

The Lord subsequently gives Joshua some clear guidance concerning his newest mission.

Joshua 1:7 – Only be strong and very courageous, being careful to do according to all the law that Moses my servant commanded you. Do not turn from it to the right hand or to the left, that you may have good success wherever you go.

Joshua disseminates the news he has received and issues orders of his own — “get ready, in three days it begins” — Israel is about to be on the move once again.

Fast forward to today, December 2010 — our tribe (Image Church) is also on the move.  Our Leader is Prophet, Priest and King.  He is Jesus.  Jesus is who we are following as we endeavor to advance His kingdom today in our days.  This work still requires the same faith, courage and obedience it always has, first individually and then corporately.  The cost is often high, and many are not willing to pay it.  However, for the handful who relentlessly persevere in faith, steadfastly pursuing the object of their devotion (Jesus), setting their face and heart to seek the Lord’s will and His ways, the reward is great both today and in eternity.  Have you / will you join us?  This is not a journey for the faint of heart.  We are a community of people on mission, and our mission is clear.

Matthew 28:18-20 – And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

Our promised land is not a tract of land but rather the hearts and souls of people.  The mission is accomplished one life at a time — never underestimate the significance of one life transformed by the Gospel.  We are busy in Northern Virginia and even all the way to Yanji, Dandong, and Dalian.  Who are you investing in?  It’s time to get started — so much remains to be done.
